DSU Flute Day: Saturday, April 22, 2023

High school, junior college, and advanced middle school flutists are invited to join us for a day of flute clinics, performances, and rehearsals, culminating in a final group flute choir concert.

  • Registration fee ($25, cash/check) includes lunch & a DSU t-shirt. Scholarships available -- contact Dr. Collins.
  • Cash or checks only, please (no credit cards). Make checks out to “DSU Department of Music.” 
  • Preregistration allows us to order t-shirts and meals, but we won't turn anyone away who wants to play! Late registrants might not be able to receive a t-shirt, but we'll do our best.

Directions from Highway 61

Turn WEST onto West Sunflower/Hwy 8 (Walgreens on corner). 
  1. Drive west 1.2 miles.
  2. You will come to the traffic light at the intersection of Hwy 8 and 5th Ave South. Don't turn--keep going west. 
  3. Take the next LEFT (turn South) onto campus. You are now on the Quad.
  4. Zeigel Hall is the second building on the right. Parking is free on Saturdays. 
  5. Visitor information, including directions to Cleveland and area hotels, is here. 
  6. Zeigel Hall is #24 on the campus map.​

Guest Artist: JJ Hatfield Curry

A third-generation flute player, JJ HATFIELD CURRY earned a Bachelor of Music Education from Delta State University in 2011. She began her career as the Director of Bands for South Pontotoc High School, where she worked for the following two years. From 2013-2019, she was an assistant band director for New Albany High School and the Director of Choral Activities for New Albany Middle School. Additionally, Ms. Curry served as the Bordeaux Winter Guard director and worked as a choreographer, costume designer, and rehearsal assistant for New Albany's annual high school musical.

Ms. Curry earned a Master of Music from the University of Mississippi and is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Mississippi, where she is working toward the completion of a PhD in Music Education. Drawing on years of experience in the field, she presently serves as the Associate Director of Bands for Blue Mountain College. Since 2019, she has overseen the wind ensemble, the woodwind chamber ensembles, and taught beginning to advanced instrumental conducting, music theory, and music methods classes. She has been selected on two separate occasions to present at the National Association for Music Education's conference regarding the practice procedures of junior high school students and student-teacher-intern relationships within the context of classroom management.  
 
Ms. Curry studied flute with Shelley Collins and has performed in master classes for Tadeu Coelho, Tracey Schmidt, Linda Pereksta, Lisa Bost, and Danilo Mezzadri.

Student Expectations
Students are expected to be at all events/concerts from 9:00am-4:45pm unless other arrangements have been made. Students may not leave the BPAC without an adult. Cell phones should be put away. Parents and teachers are welcome to stay and observe or may enjoy Cleveland's charming downtown.
Performance
All students are expect to perform at the Final Concert at ​4pm.
