DSU Flute Lessons & the Studio

I hope that flute lessons will be a very positive experience for you. Please stop by my office if you have questions between lessons. I’m happy to help. -Dr. C

Goals

DSU Flute Students...
  • Experience a wide variety of literature from many styles and periods of music.
  • Develop technical skills for the purpose of expressing themselves creatively and musically.
  • Build skills in listening, critiquing, and evaluating music.
  • Develop skills in performance, sight reading, practice techniques, setting and realizing goals, and assessment of weekly and semester-long accomplishments.
  • Become aware of habits for healthy flute playing.
  • Gain familiarity with pedagogical resources, teaching techniques, and representative repertoire.
  • Prepare for a successful career in music!
"I enjoyed the high-caliber education, as well as the welcoming, nurturing environment. In this flute studio, I was challenged--which was a lot of fun. I think we all found ourselves glad to practice these more difficult pieces to continually make ourselves better, and to not let each other down. Much of what I learned was how to listen to each other, how to tune, and how to come together as an ensemble in every aspect of each piece. The techniques we learned have stayed with me, and have been incorporated into not just how I play within a group, but into my individual flute playing."

Expectations

DSU Flute Students...
  • Practice daily, because when done right, it is satisfying, hard work (and even fun!) that leads to exciting results.
  • Perform often in ensembles and on recitals, as often as possible!
  • Show up at concerts, recitals, lessons, classes, and rehearsals.
  • Listen to great music by seeking out new recordings, live performances, and exciting repertoire.
  • Demonstrate curiosity and creativity by discovering new music, sources, and techniques. DSU Flute Students ask questions!
  • Learn from mistakes, and take steps to avoid making the same mistake twice.
  • Create a supportive community by attending performances by colleagues, professors, and guest artists...enthusiastically!
  • Act professionally and demonstrate a positive attitude. Support your classmates. Be reliable. Show up prepared. Pay attention to details. Have fun!
  • Enjoy the music. Because that's why we do this.
