Flute Prep Program Policies
Some of my advanced college flute majors teach private lessons under my supervision. This has become a very positive experience for local Cleveland students to work with college mentors at a reduced price, while giving music majors an opportunity to hone their teaching skills before working with an entire band program.
How this works:
Please see the STUDIO POLICIES for all guidelines and expectations. Additionally, please note the following:
How this works:
- The child, a parent, the instructor, and I will meet for an initial lesson and to briefly discuss studio policies. I teach all beginners to make their initial sounds while the your instructor observes. I will also select and assign method books and/or solos.
- The instructor and parents will set a weekly lesson time. Occasionally I will observe lessons.
- The instructor will keep me updated about student progress; I will make suggestions as needed.
- During the summer, when DSU students are gone, students may study with me.
Please see the STUDIO POLICIES for all guidelines and expectations. Additionally, please note the following:
- Safety: Each child is required to be accompanied by his/her parent or guardian to and from his/her scheduled studio or practice room for all lessons and rehearsals. If a parent/guardian decides to allow his/her child to walk to/from a studio/practice room without an adult, the parent/guardian waives the recommendations of the Flute Preparatory Program for the safety of his/her child. In case of emergency, the teacher will first attempt to contact child’s parent/guardian, then the DSU Police Department. If parents are late picking up a child after a lesson, an additional fee may be charged.
- Payment: Please make out monthly tuition checks directly to your instructor. (Checks for reimbursement for materials should be made out to Dr. Collins.)
- Refund Policy: There will be no tuition credit for students who miss lessons without 24 hours notice, except in the case of illness/emergency. Books are non-refundable if they have already been used by students. Please see the Studio Policies for more details about attendance.
- "Open Door" studio policy: Parents are welcome at lessons and may observe at any time. Occasionally a music professor or another DSU music student involved with the prep program may observe lessons. All visitors must observe quietly to avoid distracting the student. Taking lessons with an "audience" is a valuable experience that teaches students to be confident when others are listening.
- Communication is key. If there are any concerns or suggestions, please address them with your Flute Prep Program teacher. You may also contact Dr. Shelley Collins at [email protected] or by phone. Likewise, please pass along positive comments about your Flute Prep Program teacher--our developing teachers need your feedback to grow as educators!
- Please attend concerts! Your child will be inspired by performances offered by the DSU Department of Music free of charge. For an up-to-date list of events, visit www.deltastate.edu/music and select “concerts and events.” If your teacher is performing at a band concert or in a recital, do make every effort to attend.
